ABOUT THE CHOIR

Children 7-11 years old

Based in Wellington, New Zealand, the Manawa Ora children community choir was started 2 years ago by Madagascar-born song leader Lala SIMPSON. The choir's repertoire consists of songs from around the world. The choir is involved in interactive performances in rest homes, public spaces and community Festivals. The children learn all the songs by ear, are introduced to the solfa method, learn to use their singing voices. There is no audition and all children are welcome.

We rehearse every Tuesday from 4 pm-5:15 pm at the Conference Centre at St John's in the CityPresbyterian Church.

“My 8 year old son has been a member of Manawa Ora since the beginning of 2018.  Lala provides a fun, inclusive and safe environment for the children to participate in music-making together.  My son’s confidence has grown exponentially since joining the choir - he now freely shares his love of music with others.  This confidence is also translating to other areas of his young life where I see his experiences standing on stage contributing to his willingness to step up as a leader in his personal interactions and at school. I particularly love the concerts the choir performs for residents at rest homes around Wellington. These concerts provide a space for mutually benefical interactions between the young performers and the elderly audience. Thank you Lala for providing the children with the opportunity to learn not only about music but also the importance of community and human connections”.
